The birthplace of Pilsner beer, the historic underground tunnels and the most underrated Gothic cathedral in Bohemia — everything you need for a day trip from Prague to the Czech Republic’s beer capital
Pilsen (Plzeň) is 90km southwest of Prague — 1 hour 20 minutes by direct train from Praha Hlavní nádraží, departing roughly every hour. The Pilsner Urquell Brewery tour is the main reason most visitors come and should be booked in advance — it includes the underground lagering cellars and a glass of unfiltered tank beer that does not exist outside this building. Allow 5–6 hours for a half-day trip including the brewery; 7–8 hours if adding the historic underground and the Old Town square.
Pilsen invented Pilsner beer. In 1842, a Bavarian brewer named Josef Groll produced the first batch of bottom-fermented lager in the new Bürger Brauerei brewery — a clear golden beer unlike anything produced in Bohemia before. Every Pilsner-style beer in the world traces its lineage to that batch. The Pilsner Urquell Brewery has been producing it on the same site since then. The brewery tour, ending with a glass of unfiltered beer directly from the wooden lagering barrels in the underground cellars, is the reason to make the trip from Prague.
Getting from Prague to Pilsen
Pilsner Urquell Brewery — The Main Reason to Come
The Pilsner Urquell Brewery tour is the most specific and worthwhile experience available on a Pilsen day trip. The tour runs approximately 90 minutes and covers the historic brewing halls, the copper kettles, the hop storage and — the climax — the underground lagering cellars where the beer ferments for 30 days in traditional wooden barrels at 1°C.
The unfiltered tank beer (nefiltrovaný ležák) available only at the end of the cellar tour is the reason to make the trip. Pilsner Urquell as sold in bottles and cans is pasteurised and filtered. The version drawn directly from the wooden barrel in the lagering cellar is hazy, slightly sweet, alive with yeast — genuinely different from any version available outside this building. If you do one thing in Pilsen, this is it.
What Else to See in Pilsen
The Historic Underground
Below the streets of Pilsen’s Old Town lies 9km of medieval tunnels — dug between the 14th and 19th centuries for storage, defence and refuge. The accessible section of the underground offers guided tours with a glass of beer included (the Pilsen tradition of drinking underground continues). The tunnels are cool, atmospheric and genuinely impressive in scale. One of the most specific and underrated experiences in Bohemia.
Republic Square (náměstí Republiky)
Pilsen’s main square is one of the largest in the Czech Republic — 139m × 109m, surrounded by Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings. The Cathedral of St. Bartholomew at the centre has the tallest church tower in Bohemia (102m). The square is genuinely impressive and usually uncrowded — Pilsen does not receive the tourist volumes of Prague and the square feels like a real city centre rather than a tourist attraction.
The Great Synagogue
The second largest synagogue in Europe (after Budapest’s Dohány Street Synagogue) stands two streets from the main square — a Moorish Revival building from 1893 that most visitors to Pilsen walk past without knowing what it is. Open to visitors and worth 30 minutes inside for the interior architecture alone.
