Powder Tower Prague (Prašná brána) – A Gothic Gateway

The Powder Tower (Prašná brána) is one of Prague’s most iconic Gothic landmarks. Standing proudly at the edge of the Old Town, it once marked the beginning of the historic Royal Route, the ceremonial path taken by kings on their way to coronation at Prague Castle. Today, it is a must-see stop for visitors who want to explore Prague’s medieval charm, climb its narrow staircases, and enjoy breathtaking city views.

A Glimpse into History

The tower’s story begins in 1475, when construction started under King Vladislaus II. Originally designed as one of the main gates to the city, it was also known as the Mountain Gate. By the 17th century, it had gained its current name after being used as a gunpowder storage facility.

Over the centuries, the Powder Tower witnessed battles, fires, and multiple reconstructions. Its most significant restoration came in the late 19th century, led by architect Josef Mocker, who gave it the striking neo-Gothic look we see today.

Visiting the Powder Tower

Climbing the 186 steps to the viewing gallery rewards you with sweeping panoramas of Prague’s Old Town, New Town, and even Prague Castle in the distance. Inside, you’ll also find small exhibitions dedicated to the city’s fortifications and the tower’s role in Prague’s history.

Right next door is the magnificent Municipal House (Obecní dům), one of the finest examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Europe. The two buildings are even connected by a passageway, making it easy to explore both in one visit.
