Charles Bridge – Prague’s Most Iconic Landmark

Charles Bridge connects Staré Město (Old Town) and Malá Strana (Lesser Town). Built in the 14th century, this historic stone bridge is one of Prague’s top attractions, famous for its statues, views of the Vltava River, and lively atmosphere.

History & Architecture

Construction began in 1357 under King Charles IV, replacing the older Judith Bridge. The bridge is around 515 meters long and about 10 meters wide. It features 30 baroque statues along its sides; most originals are preserved in museums and you see faithful copies on the bridge today.

What to See & Do

Statues & Legends

The most famous statue is Saint John of Nepomuk. Many visitors touch the plaque at its base (left hand) to make a wish. Walk slowly along the bridge to admire the craftsmanship and learn the legends attached to each statue.

Views & Photo Spots

For the best photos arrive at sunrise or in the early morning before crowds arrive. Upstream views toward Prague Castle and downstream views toward the bridge towers are especially picturesque. Nearby Kampa Island also provides excellent viewpoints.

Guided Tours & Experiences

For a deeper experience, join a guided walking tour or take a Vltava River cruise. Both options give you fascinating historical context and insider stories about Charles Bridge, while letting you see it from unique perspectives.
